Tiny Terra Cotta Pot Pattern

Updated: Aug 20

Hello friends! Today’s pattern is a smallish pattern that I made to go with a cactus pattern that I recently bought, but wanted to have a more realistic pot than the one in the pattern. I wanted to be able to sneak in some fake plants with the real ones because apparently, I have way too many houseplants. It’s not my fault pothos and monstera are so easy to propagate!

I made these pots with the closest color yarn that I had to that typical terra cotta color, but you can make it in any color that you want! It’s just big enough to fit a single small crochet cactus or succulent! I highly recommend Cloud 9 Knots on Etsy’s patterns! You can also find lots of free patterns that I’m sure will work with this planter just fine. The finished size I generally ended up with was 3 inches in diameter and 2 inches tall, but that can vary a bit based on your yarn tension, so please keep that in mind! This pattern does take a little bit of patience and some new techniques, so I’ve tried my best to photograph and explain everything as thoroughly as possible, as always, please reach out to me via email or Instagram if there’s anything you need help with!

~If you have any questions about the pattern, or you just want to send me a picture of your finished project please contact me at contact.cutiepiecrochet@gmail.com! Feel free to make and sell these, but please do not mass produce! If you would like to share this pattern, please link to this page, but do not reprint it on your site. Also, please credit me when using this pattern by tagging me @cutiepie_crochet on Instagram. Thanks, and have lots of fun making your new plushie friend!~

For this pattern you will need:

-Worsted weight yarn (size 4), I used Red Heart Super Saver in “Carrot” for the pot and Red Heart Super Saver in “Coffee” for the dirt. You can use whatever colors you prefer, these are just the colors I had on hand!

-Polyester Fiber Fill

-3.75mm crochet hook

-Yarn needle

-Scissors

-Stitch markers

Abbreviations:

Mr- magic ring

St- stitch

Sc- single crochet

Inc- increase (sc twice in one stitch)

BLO- back loops only (sc only in the back loop of each st)

FLO- front loops only (sc only in the front loop of each st)

FO- finish off

Terra Cotta Pot:

Round 1: mr 6 [6]

Round 2: inc x6 [12]

Round 3: (sc 1, inc)x6 [18]

Round 4: sc 1, inc, (sc 2, inc)x5, sc 1 [24]

Round 5: (sc 3, inc)x6 [30]

Round 6: BLO sc around [30]

Round 7: sc around [30]

Round 8: (sc 9, inc)x3 [33]

Rounds 9-10: sc around [33]

Round 11: sc 5, inc, (sc 10, inc)x2, sc 5 [36]

Rounds 12-14: sc around [36]

Round 15: FLO (sc 11, inc)x3 [39]

Round 16: BLO sc around [39]

Round 17: sc around through the stitches in round 16 and the back loops of round 15 (shown in the video below) every 11 stitches, you will need to sc 2 stitches from this round through the same back loop of round 15 to make it fit. [39]

Round 18: sc around [39]

FO, weave in ends.

It helps to fold the top down so that the loops from rounds 15 and 16 are matched up. In the middle picture you can see that folding the top down makes it easier to see those back loops from row 15.

Soil:

Round 1: mr 6 [6]

Round 2: inc x6 [12]

Round 3: (sc 1, inc)x6 [18]

Round 4: sc 1, inc, (sc 2, inc)x5, sc 1 [24]

Round 5: (sc 3, inc)x6 [30]

Round 6: sc 2, inc, (sc 4, inc)x6 [36]

FO, leaving a long tail for sewing, attach to the inside of the pot, around round 15, or wherever you want it. Stuff lightly.

In order to make the bottom sit flat, you can sew the middle of the bottom of the pot to the middle of the soil (don’t pull too tight) to make the bottom of the pot concave enough for the planter to sit flat and not wobble.

And with that, you are all done and free to add whatever kind of crochet plant your heart desires! I cannot wait to see what you all add to your tiny terra cotta pots! If you end up making this pattern, I would love to see it, so please tag me on Instagram @cutiepie_crochet!

That's all for this pattern, and I'll see you here again soon for another free pattern soon!
