Hey friends! Welcome back to another Free Pattern Friday! Today's free pattern is a little bit different from my usual makes, but it is one that is very special to me- the Gradient Granny Kerchief.

Back in July, I was stuck in a hotel room in Miami, waiting for Delta Airlines to sort through their scheduling issues so I could get on a plane back to Oregon. I was coming back from a cruise and all I had to entertain myself was a small amount of cotton yarn and a 5mm crochet hook- add in a whole lot of boredom and it was a perfect recipe to get inspired to design something. So of course, I ordered some more cotton yarn on Instacart and I started designing a kerchief to keep my frizzy hair out of my face in the Florida humidity. Soon, the Gradient Granny Kerchief was born and I had one in every color!

This pattern is fairly straightforward and easy to make and I hope you have a fun time making your kerchiefs! Let's grab our crochet hooks and start crafting!

Materials:

  • 5mm crochet hook

  • Worsted weight yarn, I prefer cotton or cotton-blend but you can use whatever fiber content you want!

  • Scissors

  • Yarn needle

Abbreviations:

  • mr- magic ring

  • ch- chain

  • dc- double crochet

  • st- stitch

  • tc- triple crochet

  • ss- slip stitch

  • picot- picot stitch

Pattern notes:

  • The brackets [ ] mark out the stitches that go into the ch space in the point of the triangle to help with ease of reading.

  • At the end of each row, you will chain 3, which counts as the first tc of the next row.

  • You may need to give your finished handkerchief a gentle stretch to loosen it up and give it the correct shape at the end, especially with the ties, which tend to curl up a little bit as you’re making them.

Row 1: into a mr ch 3 (counts as tc), dc 2, ch 2, dc 2, tc 1, ch 3 and turn work. Pull mr tight

Row 2: into first st, place 2 dc, ch 1, skip 2 st, [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3, ch 1], skip 2 st, place 2 dc and 1 tc in last st . Ch 3 and turn work

Row 3: into first st, place 2 dc, ch 1, in next ch space place 3 dc, ch 1, [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3, ch 1], in next ch space place 3 dc, ch 1, place 2 dc and 1 tc in last st, ch 3 and turn work

Row 4: in first st, place 2 dc, ch 1, in next two ch spaces, place 3 dc and ch 1, [dc 3, ch 2, dc 3, ch 1], in next two ch spaces, place 3 dc and ch 1, in last st place 2 dc and 1 tc, ch 3 and turn work

Row 5: in first st place 2 dc, ch 2, in next 3 ch spaces place 2 dc and ch 2, [dc 2, ch 4, dc 2, ch 2], in next 3 ch spaces, place 2 dc and ch 2, in last st place 2 dc and 1 tc, ch 3 and turn work

Rows 6-8: Repeat in the same fashion for the next 3 rows, placing 2 dc in each ch space and chaining 2 and [2 dc, ch 4, 2 dc], making sure to ch 3 at the end of each row

Row 9: in first st place 2dc, ch 3, in next 7 ch spaces place 1 dc and ch 3, [dc 1, ch 6, dc 1, ch 3], in next 7 ch spaces, place 1 dc and ch 3, in last st place 3 dc. Ch 3 and turn work

Rows 10-12: Continue in this fashion for the next 3 rows until you have 12 total rows. If you find that this size is not quite large enough, or is too large, I recommend adding or taking away rows until the tips of your triangle reach an inch or two behind your ears.

After your last row, ch 49 (make sure your chains are not too tight!!) instead of chaining 3.

  •  In the 3rd loop (pictured below, it’s the back loop of the chain), sc 48.

  • Then evenly place sc across the top portion of the kerchief.

  • When you reach the end, ch 49, and in the 3rd loop, sc 48.

  • Continue on to the last row.

Row 13: sc in the first 3 st and sc 3 in the next ch 3 space (6 sc) then, picot st on top of each dc st followed by 3 sc in the ch spaces. [sc 3, picot, sc 3], repeat the sc 3 and picots until you reach the last ch 3 space and place sc 6 in the next 6 st. Ss into the base of the tie and tie off.

Weave in ends and block or stretch your kerchief if necessary and then you’re all set!!

I hope you have so much fun making your kerchief, if you do, you should tag me on Instagram so I can see your wonderful creations! (@cutiepie_crochet).
